Quilt the Swamp is an annual fiber art show, curated by Michael Young, that is presented at the Bluebonnet Swamp in Baton Rouge each January/February since 2002. Things may be brown and dreary in the swamp, but not in the exhibits building! This year's theme, Retrospective, includes work from past shows, and a new piece from each artist represented. The inspiration for this piece was a photograph of me and my best friend, Jandee, on the playground of the L.S.U. Kindergarten circa 1952/1953. The bottom rung of the ladder was missing so we put a tricycle between the rails and used the back of the bike as our bottom step. What FUN we had!

The I Nelsonii, with its delicate copper colored petals stands in the swamps and ditches of south Louisiana. Years ago I saw a water filled ditch blanketed with coppery irises along a roadside in south Louisiana. Today they are in danger of being lost forever. These were grown in my yard.

Cypress swamps have always fascinated me. Their beauty and mystery endure through drought, flood and sometimes fire. Stand under their canopy of leaves and feel the quiet. Egrets, herons, and slithering things call them home. Imagine what the 800+ year old cypress tree has seen. Native Americans, Spanish and French explorers, Cajuns and even old T-Rod Cheramie from La Rose may have all stopped to rest and leaned against the tree trunks for a while. These treasures must be preserved for future generation to enjoy.

For many years, I have been a person who loved the fiber arts such as knitting, crocheting, sewing clothes and quilting. My needlework started as a child in elementary school.
As a child growing up, my grandmother was a quilter, but I showed no interest. Now that I have retired, I have become a lover of knitting and quilting. I have learned many quilting techniques, being a member of the quilting guilds. I take classes to perfect my work of art.
I really got interested in art quilts when I started participating in Quilt the Swamp. I still make traditional quilts, but I like using African fabric because of the beautiful bold colors. I name each of my African quilts Sampler One, Sampler Two or whatever the number might be.
When I get tired of quilting I go to my knitting. I love knitting socks, It was a dream of mine to make socks, so I challenged myself and took classes and now I have learned to make socks.

In August of 2008, my son found a tiny kitten under the hood of the car, covered in grease and fleas. He cleaned her up and she won his heart, as well as the scorn of our other two cats. Boris, the black cat is determined to be Alpha male, and is also proud of his prowess at catching mice, while Moose the orange cat is the mighty hunter of lizards and bugs who’s afraid of everything. Oslo the kitten sleeps, dreaming no doubt of how best to annoy her big brothers.
The background in composed of five variations on the traditional Puss in the corner block. Background fabrics are hand-stamped by the artist. Cats are thread painted over fabric collage, and are based on photographs taken by the artist.

They were inseparable as kittens, and got into about as much trouble together as their names suggest! Background fabrics are hand-stamped by the artist. Quilt the Swamp 2009: Focus in the Swamp

Quilt the Swamp, an annual fiber show, opened at Bluebonnet Swamp in Baton Rouge on January 13, 2009 and ran through February 8, 2009. Many of the artists are members of the Contemporary Fiber Artists of Louisiana. The show was curated by Michael Young of Baton Rouge. The 2009 theme was "Focus in the Swamp." Each piece was inspired by a photograph by John Hartgerink, a local photographer who has taken hundreds of (wonderful) photographs in the Bluebonnet Swamp. Each piece was hung with the corresponding photo.
